Participating in SNAP, TANF or Medicaid is an Easy Way to Qualify for WIC

Pregnant or breastfeeding individuals and children under age five who receive SNAP, TANF, or Medicaid can automatically qualify for WIC. This “adjunctive eligibility” makes it easier for households already enrolled in other assistance programs to access WIC benefits without having to provide additional income verification.

Promote Wanda, WIC’s virtual assistant

Wanda is the New York State Department of Health’s new WIC virtual assistant. In a friendly and conversational tone, Wanda asks potential participants questions that prescreen for WIC eligibility. In less than three minutes, families can learn about WIC services, find out if they may be eligible, and get referrals to WIC offices near them. Wanda is easy to use on a computer, tablet or phone.

WIC Remote Benefits and $25-49 Fruit and Veggie Benefit

Use this toolkit to promote two temporary but important WIC flexibilities—the cash value benefit (CVB) increase and remote services. Learn more about these policies on our COVID-19 Updates page.

CVB increase: through September 30, most WIC moms and kids get $25-49/month to buy fruits and veggies—3-4 times more than before.

Remote benefits: WIC waivers and flexibilities associated with the COVID-19 pandemic have been extended through August 9, 2023. WIC agencies may continue to enroll and serve participants remotely via phone, text, or videoconference, and participants may postpone certain medical tests. Remote issuance of WIC benefits onto eWIC cards is now permanently allowable.
