As one in ten New Yorkers, including nearly one in six children, face food insecurity, Hunger Solutions New York is elevating the urgent need for state investment in programs that alleviate hunger and ensure New Yorkers can put food on the table. Our anti-hunger priorities:
• Restore Full Funding for the Nutrition Outreach and Education Program (NOEP).
NOEP provides free and confidential SNAP outreach and application assistance, connecting New Yorkers experiencing hunger to vital nutrition assistance. Proposed cuts in the Executive Budget would reduce NOEP services in high-need areas. Full funding is needed to maintain critical NOEP services across the state.
• Increase the SNAP Minimum Benefit to $100 Per Month.
Nearly three million New Yorkers who rely on SNAP experienced significant cuts in their benefits when pandemic emergency allotments ended in March, with some now receiving only $23 per month for groceries.
• Increase Funding for Nourish New York and the Hunger Prevention and Nutrition Assistance Program (HPNAP).
This will ensure emergency food providers have the necessary resources to support hungry New Yorkers.
• Fully Fund Healthy School Meals for All New York Kids.
Universal school meals reduce food insecurity, support learning and health, lift children out of poverty, and save families $150 per month per child in food costs. Full funding would close the gap for the 320,000 children in New York who cannot access no-cost meals during the school day.
