Director of Communications

Get to Know Hunger Solutions New York:
Hunger Solutions New York, Inc., incorporated in 1989 and based in Albany, is a statewide nonprofit organization that strives to alleviate hunger in New York by promoting awareness of hunger, public policies that contribute to ending hunger, and participation in federal nutrition assistance programs such as SNAP, WIC, the Summer Food Service Program, the School Breakfast Program, and the Child and Adult Care Food Program.

Summary of Position:
The Director of Communications will oversee the organization’s communications with all internal and external stakeholders. This will include oversight of all aspects of the organization’s public-facing communications and development efforts. The Director of Communications will be responsible for creating and implementing the organization’s strategic communication plan. Key responsibilities will include:

Strategic Tasks:

  • Develop and maintain strategic communications plan with regard to all federally funded nutrition programs, media relations, and advocacy communications
  • Develop a plan to specifically address a communications plan in alignment with current NYSDOH workplan and manage media campaign milestones
  • Grow the organization’s statewide presence and name recognition
  • Grow strategic partnerships across New York State
  • Build response communications procedures and protocols
  • Participate in agency-wide strategic planning as part of the organization’s Executive Team

Development Tasks:

  • Develop and execute a strategic fundraising plan for the organization, including a strategic online presence
  • Develop and manage donor relationships
  • Identify new grant opportunities for the organization
  • Grant writing on an as-needed basis
  • Oversee organizational special events as needed
  • Set goals and develop tracking metrics for organizational development efforts
  • Compile year-end document of annual organizational accomplishments and donor activity

Administrative Tasks:

  • Management and oversight of Communications Department and direct reports
  • Act as the liaison to the Public Affairs and Field Operations Departments to keep up to date on action updates
  • Develop and maintain tracking system for all communications action items
  • Management of larger communications projects and oversight of communications project pipeline
  • Manage overall oversight of website, visualization strategy and all communications-related data
  • Manage relationships with external vendors including contract management
  • Create internal controls for document security and material inventory

Qualifications:
The position necessitates a basic understanding of the role of federal nutrition programs in alleviating hunger, and the professionalism required to promote the programs to the satisfaction of our government and private funders. Additionally the candidate should possess the following qualifications:

  • MBA or Master’s Degree in Communications preferred, Bachelor’s Degree in Communications or related field required
  • 5-8 Years of progressive communications management experience
  • Proven ability to lead development efforts in a not-for-profit organization
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Experience as brand management leader
  • Must reside in New York State

Compensation and Benefits:
Hunger Solutions New York is committed to its employees and thusly provides a competitive compensation package. Salary will be commensurate with experience, but is expected to be $65-$70K. Hunger Solutions New York offers fully paid benefit premiums including health, dental, life, short- and long-term disability, and a retirement plan that offers a 5% match (different vesting periods apply to each benefit and will be discussed as part of the interview process). A Health Reimbursement Account (HRA) may be available depending upon the health insurance package chosen. Additionally, Hunger Solutions New York offers a generous amount of vacation, sick and holiday time off to each employee.
